Fraser Health Fails to Provide Assurances About the Future of Obstetric and Paediatric Beds at Ridge Meadows Hospital

Jun 25 2010

The public forum I hosted in Maple Ridge Wednesday night  was well attended.  Families clearly expressed their desire to keep our paediatric and obstetric beds.  Fraser Health did a lot of talking about improving services and how they hadn’t made any decisions.  However, when questioned directly, they would not confirm that no beds will be removed from paediatrics and obstetrics at RMH.  We are circulating a petition in the community over the summer to further enforce our message to Fraser Health.  The petition is not at my office but you can find locations where it can be found through the “Help Save Ridge Meadows maternity Ward” group on Facebook.

Dalton Should Follow Lekstrom’s Lead and Stand Up for His Constituents, Says Sather

MEDIA RELEASE

DALTON SHOULD FOLLOW LEKSTROM’S LEAD AND STAND UP FOR HIS CONSTITUENTS, SAYS NDP

MAPLE RIDGE – Marc Dalton should listen to the voters in Maple Ridge-Mission and reject the HST, New Democrats say.

“Voters in Maple Ridge-Mission have been loud and clear in their rejection of this HST doublecross,” said Michael Sather, the MLA for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows. “It’s time for Mr. Dalton to pause and take a long hard look at what the people who elected him want him to do.”

Dalton has repeatedly backed the B.C. Liberals and their plans to bring in the HST, as opposition voices in his constituency continue to get louder and louder.

“I recall being in the house, and seeing Mr. Dalton stand up and call the HST the ‘Honest Sales Tax.’ The reaction in the house when he said that was one of disbelief – time and time again, this government says one thing and means another,” said Sather.

Sather went on to describe Dalton talking about his constituents, and how they “understand” why the HST is necessary. Referring to the rationale for the HST during the budget debate, Dalton said “In general, most people get it. Almost everybody seems to understand it.”

“When Mr. Dalton says that most people in his constituency “understand” why the HST is a good thing, he really shows how out of touch he is with the people in Maple Ridge-Mission,” Sather said. “What they understand is that they’re facing a $1.9 billion tax shift from businesses onto consumers, and that’s the problem.”

“If Mr. Dalton truly wants to be on the same page as the voters in his constituency, he should follow former cabinet minister Blair Lekstrom’s lead, and stand up for his constituents.”

A message from Michael regarding the potential closure of the Ridge Meadows Hospital Maternity Ward

Jun 14 2010

You may be aware that the Fraser Health Authority is considering closing our pediatric (child and youth) beds at Ridge Meadows Hospital and possibly our obstetric (care of women prior to, during and after birth) ward. I have been told that our pediatric beds could be replaced by an “observation unit” which, I assume, means that a parent going to RMH with their sick child would see their child assessed and sent home or referred to another hospital. Apparently the FHA is looking at consolidating pediatric and obstetric services in Royal Columbian, Surrey Memorial and Abbotsford hospitals. This is a real concern for parents in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Getting a sick child to RCH or SMH in a timely fashion can be a problem, especially during morning and afternoon rush hours. This is a health and safety issue and parents are right to be concerned.

Closing or significantly reducing our obstetric services would also be problematic. Pregnant women need to see their obstetrician on a regular basis. After giving birth they may need to take their child to the obstetrician as well. Having to go outside the community would be time consuming and would add more stress to families, many of whom are already dealing with long commutes to work.

Losing pediatric and obstetric services would have a cascading effect on services in our area. Without obstetrics, in particular, there would be fewer surgeries and reduced need for anesthetic services. This makes it harder to keep anesthesiologists at our hospital and would affect all surgeries.

I am hosting a public forum for residents to express their concerns about these proposed changes. It is tentatively scheduled for the evening of June 23.
